The City of Las Cruces reminds business owners and residents that the Gross Receipts Tax collected on the sale of goods and services will increase from the current 7.5625% to 7.9375% today.
The increase is the result of thethree-eighths of 1 percent change in the GRT rate approved by City Council in October 2013. The increase will help offset revenues lost as a result of the state legislature’s repeal of the Hold Harmless reimbursements to municipalities for taxes that would have been collected on food and medicine.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation reminds New Mexicans that the state’s prohibition of texting while driving goes into effect today. “Texting while driving is now the leading cause of death for teen drivers,” said Governor Susana Martinez. “There is no text message, no Facebook post, no tweet, worth a person’s life. All of us can play a role in keeping our roads safe — and that means keeping our eyes on the road, hands on the wheel, and our minds on driving safely.”

The National Weather Service is calling for a 50 percent chance of precipitation tonight. In the event of localized flooding, the Las Cruces Fire Department is making sandbags available to Las Cruces residents.
The number of sandbags is limited to 10 per homeowner. They are intended to keep water from entering a dwelling so they should be placed around doorways and other entrances that are susceptible to flooding.
The sandbags are not intended to protect landscaping or vegetation. Las Cruces residents may pick up sandbags at any of the following fire stations:

N. Main/US 70 Las Cruces
The NMDOT with G. Sandoval Construction has placed traffic control devices and concrete wall barriers along US 70 from Chestnut to just south of Solano Drive interchange. Motorists will encounter one lane restrictions for both east and westbound traffic, which is limited to 10 feet within the work zone. The contractor continues work along the median and on the inner lanes; speed limit is posted at 35 MPH.
